Restoration of Bauhaus villa garden

Project and location
Bauhaus villa with protected rock formations, Pasarét neighborhood, Budapest

Description

This project was more of a restoration of the garden’s natural beauty than a new design. The house, built in the 1930s, is a beautiful example of Bauhaus restraint and functionality. The owners restored it to a high standard and wanted a garden to match. The garden, neglected for a few decades, represents an interesting counterpoint to the house – it has an irregular, natural beauty. There are several lovely stone retaining walls built in the 1930s or even earlier, as well as a gorgeous natural cliff formation that rises to a height of about 15 meters on one side of the garden. It’s somewhere between a woodland garden and a rock garden – an unusual and exciting challenge!

When we started, the garden was badly overgrown and unhealthy. Most of our work focused on the stone formation and the area around it. We cleared out a lot of the unhealthy saplings and shrubs that had come up over the years, which then allowed the more valuable old plantings – Hellebores, hazelnut trees, and several native wildflowers – to make a strong comeback. We did a dense, natural planting including a lot of native perennials and ferns. We also created a front garden with mugo pine, winter-blooming Jasmine, ornamental grasses and several striking perennials such as Telekia.

We made an effort to keep the garden natural and low-maintenance so the owners could just relax and enjoy it.
